Question : Setting up of Regional Medical Centres

Will the Minister of HEALTH AND FAMILY WELFARE be pleased to state:

(a) whether the Government has approved setting up of a regional medical centre in Gorakhpur for in depth research on children’s diseases;

(b) if so, the details thereof and the funds allocated along with the total number of such centres functioning in the country as on date, State-wise;

(c) whether such regional centres for in-depth research on children’s diseases will be set up in other States also;

(d) if so, the details thereof; and

(e) if not, the reasons therefor?

(a) & (b): Yes, the Government has approved a Regional Medical Research Centre (RMRC) at Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh with focus on regional health issues including child mortality. The projected cost for next five years of this Centre is Rs.84.03 crore. The other RMRCs functioning in the country under Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) are at –
i) Bhubaneswar, Odisha;
ii) Dibrugarh, Assam;
iii) Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar Island, and;
iv) Jodhpur Rajasthan.
(c) to (e): There is no such proposal as many research Institutes of ICMR across the country also work in the area of child health. In addition to this, ICMR also funds research in the area of child health in various medical colleges.
