As per the State of Forest Report, 2005, the current forest and tree cover is 768751 sq. km which account for 23.39% of the geographical area of the country.The target for the current Plan period is to bring 1% of the total geographical area every year and a total of 5% under forest and tree cover. During the Eleventh Plan, a total outlay of Rs 3700 cr.has been provided for the National Afforestation Program (Rs 2000 cr.), the Integrated Development of Wildlife Habitats (Rs 800 cr,) and Social Forestry with Communities (Rs 900 cr.), which involve plantation. A National Mission “Green India “ to achieve the target has been launched in 2008. The Mission will be implemented by the National Afforestation and Eco-Development Board (NAEB) of the Ministry of Environment and Forests. Rs. 250 cr. has been allocated to the NAEB for the Eleventh Plan. In respect of rubber, tea and coffee plantations the total outlay for the current plan period is Rs 569.17 crores. The area to be covered for plantation and re-plantation of rubber and new tea plantation is 8350 ha and 8000ha. respectively.
