(a), (b) and (c) Erosion in banks and beds of the
rivers including those in Barak Valleys is a natural
phenomena, the intensity of which varies with location from
year to year. Assam Government has been requesting Central
Government for funds to control floods and arrest erosion
problem.
The Central Government has provided Central Loan
Assistance to the State Government of Assam from 1974-75
onwards. An amount of Rs.390.94 crore as loan and Rs.10.09
crore as grant has been provided to the State Government of
Assam upto March, 2000. Central Government has also framed a
Flood Control Scheme titled âFlood Control Schemes in
Brahmaputra and Barak Basinâ amounting to Rs. 50.00 crore
for the remaining two years of the Ninth Plan period in
which the share of Assam is Rs.40 crore. The scheme has
been approved by the Expenditure Finance Committee.
