Answer given by the minister

Minister of Human Resource Development
(Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’)

(a) to (e): The number of Indian Higher Education Institutions amongst first 500 in Times
Higher Education World University Rankings have increased from 2 institutions in 2018
to 5 institutions in 2019.
National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) was launched by Ministry of
Human Resource Development in September 2015. The framework is being used for
ranking of institutions of higher education in India from 2016 onwards (called India
Rankings). The primary purpose of India Rankings is to galvanize Indian Institutions
towards a competitive environment amongst the institutions to perform better. The key
parameters used in India Rankings would help institutions to work sincerely towards
improving their ranking amongst institutions of the world.
The Government is implementing schemes like Impacting Research Innovation and
Technology (IMPRINT) India, Uchhatar Avishkar Yojana (UAY) and Global Initiative of
Academic Networks (GIAN) etc. to improve the rankings of Indian Higher Education
Institutions.
