Question : REVIEWING OF MCI ACT



(a) whether the Government have been considering to reconstitute the Medical Council of India;

(b) if so, the details and the reasons therefor; and

(c) the composition of the new Council?

(a) to (c) : The Joint Parliamentary Committee in its Report dated 28th July, 1989 on the Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Bill, 1987 recommended for several amendments to the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956 including the broad basing of the Medical Council of India. The Government have not yet taken a final decision in the matter as the comprehensive amendments to the draft amendment Bill recommended by the Joint Parliamentary Committee is being deliberated upon in consultation with the State Governments, Universities Medical Council of India, medical institutions and all concerned departments in the light of the various new developments which have taken place in the field of medical education and the judgements of the Honourable Supreme Court of India on related issues delivered in the meantime.
