Question : PROJECT PROPOSAL FOR COASTAL CONSERVATION



(a) whether the Government of Gujarat has submitted an integrated project for coastal conservation and management;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether the project has been recommended for external assistance;

(d) if so, the details thereof; and

(e) the time by which it is likely to be done?

(a) & (b) The Central Government has initiated an Integrated Coastal Zone Management project based on the approach suggested by Prof. M. S. Swaminathan Committee that reviewed the Coastal Regulation Zone Notification, 1991. One of the States identified for the project is Gujarat. Government of Gujarat has also communicated their acceptance for implementing the project in Gujarat.

(c) & (d) For implementing the above project the Central Government has sought technical and financial assistance from multilateral donor agencies including World Bank. The project includes demarcation of vulnerability line, mapping of ecologically sensitive areas, institutional development and capacity building and control of pollution from land based activities and preparation of Integrated Coastal Zone Management Plan for identified stretches of coastal areas of Gujarat.

(e) The identification mission of the World Bank has recently visited Gujarat in October, 2006 and held discussions with State Government officials. As such no time frame has been fixed in this regard.
