Question : Strengthening of NCSC

(a) whether the Government is considering legal and administrative measures for strengthening the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC);

(b) if so, the details thereof; and

(c) the steps taken/proposed to be taken by the Government in this regard?

(a): The National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) is a Constitutional Body set up under Article 338 of the Constitution. The Commission has powers to investigate and monitor all matters relating to safeguards provided to the Scheduled Castes, to inquire into specific complaints with respect of deprivation of right etc. The new Chairman, Vice Chairman and three Members have assumed the office in the Commission in June 2017. The Commission is functioning with 12 Regional Offices and discharging its duties satisfactorily. The Government would take necessary action to strength the Commission as and when required.
