Question : Criteria fixed for Selection of Monuments as Centrally Protected Monuments

(a) whether Archaeological Survey of India(ASI) has declared monuments as Centrally Protected Monuments in various States in the country;

(b) if so, the details of criteria fixed for selection of monuments as Centrally Protected Monuments;

(c) the details of numbers of monuments protected by ASI and the details of expenditure incurred on maintenance of various such monuments during each of the last three years, State-wise;

(d) the number of monuments in Odisha and out of these eligible for ASI protection as per the criteria fixed for the purpose; and

(e) the reasons for not including them in the Centrally Protected
Monuments list?

(a) Yes, Sir.

(b) Section 2 of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958 specifies criterion for ancient monument as “any structure, erection or monument, or any tumulus or place of interment, or any cave, rock sculpture, inscription or monolith, which is of historical, archaeological or artistic interest and which has been in existence for not less than one hundred years” and is of National Importance. For ancient sites and remains, the Act specifies as “ancient site and remains containing or is reasonably believed to contain ruins of relics of historical or archaeological importance which have been in existence for not less than one hundred years” and is of National Importance

(c) There are 3691 monuments/sites protected by the Archaeological
Survey of India in the country. The details of monuments/sites (State/UT-wise) is at Annexure-I. The funds allocated and expenditure incurred for conservation, preservation and maintenance of all centrally protected monuments / sites in the country (State/UT-wise) during the last three years is at Annexure-II.

(d)& (e) There are 80 number of monuments in Odisha found eligible under the control of Archaeological Survey of India and are declared as monument of national importance.
