Question : Quacks in AYUSH System of Medicine

(a) whether the Government is aware that practice of AYUSH system of medicine by quacks has eroded the faith of the public in these systems; and

(b) if so, the steps taken by the Government to deal with such quacks and to rebuild the public faith in the AYUSH system?

(a) & (b) Yes. In order to deal with quacks in the Ayush system, the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine Act, 2020 (erstwhile, Indian Medicine Central Council Act, 1970) and National Commission for Homoeopathy Act, 2020 (erstwhile, Homoeopathy Central Council Act, 1973), provides for taking action by the concerned State Government on any person who is not recognised under the provisions of the said Acts and found practising in these system are liable to be penalized with imprisonment for a term which may extend to one year, or with fine which may extend to five lakh rupees, or with both.

Further, the Board of Ethics and Registration for Indian System of Medicine under National Commission for Indian System of Medicine, New Delhi and The Board of Ethics and Registration for Homoeopathy under National Commission for Homoeopathy, New Delhi shall maintain a National Register of all licensed practitioners of Indian System of Medicine and Homoeopathy respectively; regulate professional conduct and promote medical ethics and exercise appellate jurisdiction.
