Question : GARBAGE MANAGEMENT PROJECTS



(a) whether the State Governments and non-Governmental organizations have applied for financial assistance for garbage management projects ;

(b) if so, the details of the application received in this regard and approved by the Government during the last three years and the current year ;

(c) whether the Government has any scheme to grow awareness about environment; and

(d) if so, the details thereof ?

MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF ENVIRONMENT AND FORESTS (SHRI NAMO NARAIN MEENA)

(a)&(b) Proposals were invited from the States for setting up of model facilities for the management of municipal solid waste as per the Municipal Solid Wastes

(Management and Handling) Rules, 2000. In response to the same 22 project proposals were received through the State Pollution Control Boards by the Central Pollution Control Board during the last three years. Out of these, 7 proposals viz. North Dum Dum and New Barrackpore municipality in West Bengal, Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh in the UT of Chandigarh, Udumalaipet Municipality in Tamil Nadu, Kohima Municipality in Nagaland, Suryapet Municipality in Andhra Pradesh, Mandi Municipality in Himachal Pradesh and Kozhikode Municipal Corporation in Kerala, have been funded on a cost sharing basis.

(c)&(d) Since 1986, with the objective of creating environmental awareness at the national level, the Ministry of Environment & Forests is organising the National Environment

1 Awareness Campaign (NEAC). During the last two years the theme for NEAC is`Solid Waste Management`.
