Question : Complaints of Adulteration

(a) whether complaints of adulteration in food items during festival season are rising every year in the country;
(b) if so, the number of such complaints reported to the Government during the last three years along with the action taken thereon, State-wise; and
(c) the steps being taken by the Government to check incidents of adulteration in food items?

(a) to (c): The implementation and enforcement of Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 primarily rests with the State/UT Governments.
Cases of adulteration in food products have come to the notice of FSSAI and accordingly the Commissioners of Food Safety throughout the country have been repeatedly urged to take up strict enforcement of standards.
As per the information received from States/UTs, the details of Food samples collected, tested, found not conforming and action taken during the last three years is at Annexure I, II & III.
Food Safety and Standards Authority of India also regularly follows up with the State authorities, intermittent communications and interactions during the meetings of the Central Advisory Committee (which comprise of the Commissioner of Food Safety of all states and UTs) for effective implementation of the Act and the Rules and Regulations thereunder.
Regular surveillance, monitoring and inspection are undertaken by State/UT Governments under FSS Act, 2006 to check compliance of the related Rules and Regulations. Steps for increasing awareness among the general public are also taken by FSSAI.
