Question : Traditional Tamil Medicine

Will the Minister of AYURVEDA, YOGA AND NATUROPATHY, UNANI, SIDDHA AND HOMOEOPATHY (AYUSH) be pleased to state:

(a) whether the Government has taken any steps to promote the traditional Tamil medicine of Siddha, if so, the details thereof;

(b) whether the Government has sanctioned any funds for the upgradation of Government Siddha Medical College, Palayamkottai in Tirunelveli district;

(c) if so, the details thereof; and

(d) if not, the reasons therefor?

(a): Yes, Traditional Siddha System of Medicine is promoted and popularized through programmes and activities of Central Council for Research in Siddha (CCRS), Chennai and the National Institute of Siddha (NIS), Chennai as well as National Ayush Mission (NAM).

Central Council for Research in Siddha (CCRS), which is an apex organization under Ministry of AYUSH was established for initiating, undertaking, formulating, developing, coordinating, promoting research on scientific lines and providing healthcare facilities in the Siddha system of medicine for treatment of various diseases.

Further, the Government has also established National Institute of Siddha (NIS), Chennai, an autonomous body under Ministry which is a premier institute of Siddha in the country to develop high standards of teaching, training, research and to provide medical care through Siddha system of medicine and treatment.

(b): Yes.

(c): Under Centrally Sponsored Scheme of National AYUSH Mission (NAM), Ministry of AYUSH has approved an amount of Rs. 4.166 lakhs & Rs. 9.00 lakhs during the year 2016-17 and 2018-19 respectively for the upgradation of Government Siddha Medical College, Palayamkottai in Tirunelveli district as per the proposal received from State Government of Tamilnadu through State Annual Action Plans (SAAPs).
(d): Does not arise.
