Question : Removal of Liquor Shops on NHs

(a) whether the Supreme Court has directed to remove liquor-shops operating on National and State Highways;

(b) if so, the details thereof along with the total number of liquor shops shut down on NHs as on date, State-wise;

(c) the steps taken by the Government on the direction of amending State excise laws in this regard; and

(d) the outcome thereof?

(a) Yes Madam.

(b) to (d) Data on liquor shops is not compiled in this Ministry and licensing of liquor shops is covered under Excise Policy of the States. However, in the wake of increasing number deaths due to drunken driving, Chief Secretaries / Principal Secretaries/Secretaries (Transport) of all states/UTs have been requested to ensure that no license is issued to liquor vendors along national highway.
