Question : Zero Discharge of Pollutants into Ganga River

(a) whether the Government has achieved zero discharge of pollutants in 17 out of the 27 distillery units around Ganga river under its ambitious Clean Ganga Mission and if so, the details thereof;

(b) the time by which the zero discharge of pollutants is to be achieved in the remaining distillery units; and

(c) the budget allocated for this mission?

(a) & (b) Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has inventoried 35 distilleries, out of which 5 are closed and 3 are brewery/ bottling unit. Out of remaining 27 units, 17 have achieved Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD). Out of remaining 10 units, 1 unit has been closed by CPCB for failure in installation of Online Continuous Effluent Monitoring System (OCEMS) and 09 units, which are yet to achieve ZLD by installing Multiple-Effect Evaporator (MEE) have been issued closure direction through State Pollution Control Boards (SPCBs) under section 18(1) (b) on 22.12.2016.

(c) No budget has been allocated by the Government for achieving ZLD by the distillery units.
