Question : Natural Gas Reserves

(a) whether there is an immense potential of natural gas resources in Jharkhand, if so, the details thereof; and
(b) whether the Government has conducted any study or survey in this regard, if so, the details thereof?

(a & b) : Potential for natural gas in the form of Coal Bed Methane (CBM) exists in Jharkhand. The estimated Coal Bed Methane resources in the state of Jharkhand are of the order of 722 Billion Cubic Meters. Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) Limited is operating in three CBM blocks i.e Bokaro, North Karanpura and Jharia in the State of Jharkhand. ONGC has completed exploration phase in all three blocks and established commercial availability of CBM. The total in-place volume of CBM gas established through exploratory work, as reported by ONGC, in three blocks is 54.32 Billion Cubic Meters.
