Question : Unrest among Students of NIT

(a) whether the Government is aware of the unrest among students of National Institute of Technology(NIT), Srinagar;

(b) if so, the reasons therefor and the demands of the students made in this regard;

(c) whether the Government has sent a team of the Ministry to resolve the crisis being witnessed for the last few days;

(d) if so, the details of the recommendations made by the team of the Ministry and the outcome thereof; and

(e) the steps taken by the Government to instill confidence among students in the campus, especially to provide sense of security to girl students?

(a) to (e) : Yes, Madam. A communication was received in the Ministry from National Institute of Technology (NIT), Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir) on 01st April, 2016 regarding student unrest due to the confrontation between two groups of students of NIT, Srinagar which took place on 01st April, 2016. Subsequently, it was reported that J&K Police lathi charged agitating students of NIT, Srinagar on 5th April, 2016. The major demand of the students was to shift the NIT out of Srinagar. The Ministry of Human Resource Development had sent its team to take stock of the situation. Adequate Security Forces have been deployed to provide a sense of security to the students including girl students.
