Question : OBSCENITY IN VISUAL MEDIA



(a) whether obscenity is on the rise in the programmes and advertisements in the visual media;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) the number of such cases reported during each of the last three years and the current year along with action taken thereon, case-wise;

(d) whether the Government proposes to bring any new Law to check the adverse effects of such programmes and advertisements, especially on children; and

(e) if so, the details thereof?

(a) to (c) No such study has been brought to the notice of this Ministry. There is no pre-censorship of programmes telecast on Private TV channels. However, all programmes and advertisements telecast on TV channels and transmitted/retransmitted through the Cable TV network are required to adhere to the Programme and Advertising Codes prescribed under the Cable TV Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995 and Rules framed thereunder. Action is taken as per rules whenever violation of Codes is brought to the notice of the Ministry. Details of action taken on violation of Programme and Advertisement code by Private TV channels for telecast of obscene visuals in the last three years and the current year is enclosed at Annexure.

(d) & (e) There is no such proposal at present.
