(a) After the re-notification of Biomedical Waste Management Rules, 2016 (BMWM Rules, 2016), the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has assessed the compliance status of 16 Health Care Facilities (HCFs), 44 Common Biomedical Waste Treatment Facilities (CBWTFs), 20 Educational Institutions (EI) and other establishments. Based on the discrepancies observed in compliance, CPCB issued directions under section 5 of Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 against 12 HCFs and 28 CBWTFs. The CPCB had also imposed Environmental Compensation against 20 CBWTFs and 2 HCFs. Further, the non-compliances observed in respect of 92 Veterinary institutions were communicated to the respective State Governments and Union Territories. Additionally, for proper management of COVID-19 bio-medical waste, CPCB issued directions to 33 CBWTFs for not feeding data on a COVID-19 BMW Tracking App, which was developed for reporting the quantity of COVID-19 related biomedical waste collection and disposal.
(b) CPCB has initiated action against HCFs under Section 5 of Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 for violation of BMWM Rules, 2016, as mentioned below:
