Question : Desilting of Water Bodies

(a) whether the Government has allocated any funds to desilt, renovate and raise the bunds of water bodies in Tamil Nadu;
(b) if so, the details thereof and if not, the reasons therefor;
(c) whether the Government has provided any other special component funds from both Union Government and Foreign Financial Institutions for the said projects; and
(d) if so, the details thereof?

(a) to (d) Works related to water resources development & management are planned, funded, executed and maintained by the State Governments themselves as per their own resources and priorities. In order to supplement the efforts of the State Governments, Government of India provides technical and financial assistance to State Governments to encourage sustainable development and efficient management of water resources through various schemes and programmes.

Central Assistance (CA) for restoration of water bodies is provided by the Ministry under the scheme of Repair, Renovation and Restoration (RRR) of Water Bodies which is a component of Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY).

Under the scheme, 242 water bodies have been taken up for restoration with an estimated cost of Rs.127.06 crore in the State of Tamil Nadu. Central Assistance (CA) amounting to Rs.32.99 crore has been released to the State for these water bodies including Rs.16.74 crore during 2019-20.

Further, as per information available, a project for external assistance of US$ 454 Million from World Bank was also signed between Department of Economic Affairs, State Government of Tamil Nadu and World Bank for implementing "Irrigated Agriculture Modernization and Water Resources Management Project Phase-II”. The objective of this project is to increase irrigated agriculture productivity in sustainable water resources management framework for selected Cauvery sub-basins. Implementation period of the project is from 23.01.2018 to 22.01.2024.
