Question : Promotion of Rural and Tribal Sports

(a) the total number of Indian Rural and Tribal Sports included in the National Games, Asian Games and Olympic Games;

(b) whether the Union Government has taken or proposed to take any steps to promote Indian Rural and Tribal sports across the country particularly in Tamil Nadu;

(c) if so, the details thereof; and

(d) the total funds/budget allocated to the State of Tamilnadu to promote Indian Rural and Tribal sports during the last three years, year-wise?

(a) Details of Indian Rural and Tribal Sports included in the National Games, Asian Games and Olympic Games are as under:

(i) Asian Games - Kabaddi
(ii) Olympics - Nil
(iii) National Games - Kabaddi, Kho-Kho

(b) and (c) Yes, Sir. Under the Khelo India Scheme and Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat programme of the Union Government, thirty-six sports competitions/events have been organised in 2019-20 to promote indigenous and tribal games in various disciplines, namely, Gatka, Roll Ball, Tug of War, Kalaripayattu, Thang-Ta, Kho-Kho, Mallakhamb, Shooting Ball, Sqay, Kabaddi, etc. in various parts of the country. Out of these thirty-six events, two events of Sqay were held at Annai Sathya Stadium, Thanjavur, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, from 21-23 February, 2020.
Further, Mallakhamb, Kalaripayattu, Gatka and Thang-Ta are being supported under the vertical of ‘Promotion of Rural and Indigenous/ Tribal Games’ of Khelo India Scheme and the financial support is being provided to the concerned National Sports Federation (NSF) for talent identification, expenditure on equipment, apparel, coaches training programme, infrastructure development, salary for coaches and scholarships for meritorious trainees recommended by the NSFs.

(d) State/UT-wise fund allocations are not made under the schemes/programmes of the Department of Sports.
