Question : IMPORT OF FOODGRAINS



(a) the total production and stock of wheat and rice in the country during each of the last two years and the current year;

(b) the quantum of wheat and rice exported/imported by the Government during the said period;

(c) whether the said foodgrains were imported despite surplus availability during the said period;

(d) if so, the details thereof and the reasons therefor;

(e) whether the Government has formulated any plan to increase export of surplus wheat and rice in the ensuing years; and

(f) if so, the details thereof?

(a) The total production of wheat and rice during last two years and targets for current year are as under:-

(b), (c) & (d) Export of wheat and rice has been banned from 9.2.2007 and 1.4.2008 respectively. However exports of following quantities of wheat from Central Pool have been allowed as humanitarian aid on diplomatic basis :-

During 2010-11, Government has allowed export of 3 lakh tons of Parboiled non-basmati rice to Bangladesh from Central Pool.

There has been no import of rice and wheat on Government account during last two years and current year.

(e) & (f): For the present the ban on exports of wheat and rice continues.
