Question : Female Sterilization

Will the Minister of HEALTH AND FAMILY WELFARE be pleased to state:

(a) whether the Government is aware that female sterilization accounts for 74.4 percent of birth control methods whereas only 2.3 per cent account for male sterilization adopted in India and if so, the details thereof and the reasons therefor;

(b) whether the Government is aware of the survey by International Centre for Research on Women which states that almost four out of every five sterilized women had three or more children and if so, the details thereof and the reasons therefor;

(c) whether the findings of the survey were discussed during an on-going Difficult Dialogues Summit in Goa and if so, the details thereof;

(d) whether a panel of experts have recommended more stability by promoting use of modern contraceptives like condoms and injectables to improve the method mix while also giving women more rights and increase awareness to protect her reproductive right; and

(e) if so, the details thereof and the response of the Government thereto?

(a): Yes. Female sterilization is one of the most accepted methods of contraception in India. The Government offers a basket of choice to the clients who adopt a method as per their choice in line with their reproductive rights.
(b): No.

(c) to (e): Does not arise.
