Answer given by the minister

MINISTER OF STATE FOR EXTERNAL AFFAIRS

(SHRI AJIT KUMAR PANJA)

(a) & (b) Russia has said that it is prepared to reduce strategic offensive arms on a reciprocal basis with the United States to a level lower than that provided for in the 1997 Russian-American agreement in Helsinki i.e. to 1500 warheads each instead of 2000-2500. A Summit meeting between the Russian President and the US President is scheduled for June 2000. As in the past the future course of bilateral nuclear arms reduction measures is expected to form part of the discussions.
