Question : Restoration of Monuments and Heritage Sites

a) whether the Government has formulated any policy for conservation of the World Heritage Sites in India and if so, the details of protected monuments/forts/ heritage sites lying in dilapidated conditions due to lack of proper maintenance along with the action proposed to be taken for restoration of these monuments, States/ UTs and monument-wise;

(b) the monument/fort/heritage site-wise details of the financial assistance granted and expenditure incurred for the conservation, protection and establishment during the last three years, State-wise;

(c) the details of organisations other than the Government involved in the maintenance and conservation of protected monuments in the country;

(d) whether the Government has received proposals from the various State Governments for the protection of ancient monuments and inclusion of more monuments in the list during the last three years and if so, the status of the proposals and the funds sanctioned by the Government to various State Governments in this regard, State-wise including Rajasthan; and

(e) whether a recent World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Survey has identified certain natural world Heritage sites in the country to be on the verge of extinction and if so, the details thereof?

(a) Yes Madam. The conservation work of protected monuments under Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) including World Heritage Sites is attended as per the conservation policy of the ASI and International Charters for conservation of historical buildings recognized by the UNESCO. The conservation work of the protected monuments is attended regularly and they are in a good state of preservation.

(b) The State-wise details of expenditure incurred for conservation of protected monuments, under the ASI, during the last three years are given in annexure-I.

(c) The conservation work of the protected monuments is attended by the ASI only. No protected monument has been handed over to any other organization for maintenance at present except Khan-e-Khana’s Tomb within Humayun’s Tomb complex where conservation work has been taken up by Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC) under the overall supervision of ASI.

(d) Yes Madam. The details of proposals received for protection of ancient monuments from various State Governments and their status is given in annexure-II. Once a site is declared as protected monument, ASI takes care for its conservation and no funds in this regard are provided to State Governments.

(e) No natural world Heritage site in the country has been included in the endangered list of UNESCO.
