Question : Indian System of Medicine

a) whether the Government agrees with the view that India’s push to attract investment and promote Indian Systems of Medicine should not be at the cost of diluting the Biological Diversity regime;
(b) if so, the corrective/remedial measures taken/ proposed to be taken by the Government in this regard; and (c) if not, the reasons therefor?

(a) Yes.
(b) Government has set up National Medicinal Plants Board in the year 2000 to look into all matters related to Medicinal Plants and the overall development of the Medicinal Plants sector in the country.
The Board has been implementing various Schemes/Programmers for conservation, development, sustainable management and cultivation of the medicinal & aromatic plants of medicinal values in the country. Under its “Central Sector Scheme on Conservation, Development and Sustainable Management of Medicinal Plants” is supporting Resource Augmentation of Medicinal Plants, Conservation of medicinal plants in their natural habitats by way of establishing Medicinal Plants Conservation and Development Areas (MPCDAs) and plantation of medicinal plants in forest areas through in-situ resource augmentation and plantation outside designated forest areas through ex-situ resource augmentation.
