Question : Data Protection Review

Will the Minister of ELECTRONICS & INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY be pleased to state:

(a) whether the Government is contemplating to review net neutrality and data protection and to bring new regulations in this regard;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether the Government is considering to make it mandatory for service and content provider companies to keep data servers in the country to increase data security and if so, the details thereof;

(d) whether any measures have been taken by the Government to give relief to companies particularly startup companies from additional financial burden which comes as a result of data security norms; and

(e) if so, the details thereof?

Answer given by the minister

and (b):The Government has introduced The Personal Data Protection Bill, 2019 in Parliament during winter session in year 2019. The Bill was referred to Joint Committee of Parliamentwhich has tabled its report in Parliament in December, 2021. The said report is under examination. There is no proposal under consideration to review the Net Neutrality at present.

(c): No, Sir.There is no such proposal under consideration that makes it mandatory for service and content provider companies to keep data servers in the country to increase data security.

(d): No, Sir. There is no such proposal under consideration to give relief to companies or startups.

(e): Does not arise.
