Question : EMPLOYMENT IN MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY SECTOR



(a) whether only 11% labourers of the total work force are getting employment in the manufacturing industry/sector of the country;

(b) if so, the details thereof and the reasons therefor; and

(c) the reaction of the Government thereto in this regard?

(a & b) Yes, Madam. Reliable estimates of employment and unemployment are obtained through quinquennial labour force surveys conducted by National Sample Survey Office. Last such survey was conducted during 2009-10. As per the results of the last survey, employment in manufacturing industry/sector has been estimated at about 51 million out of the total workforce of 465.48 million in the country during 2009-10 which accounts for 11 percent of the total workforce.

(c) Government of India has announced the National Manufacturing Policy in November, 2011 and one of the objectives of the policy is to create 100 million additional jobs by 2025 in manufacturing sector.
