Question : Deaths due to Brain Stroke

Will the Minister of HEALTH AND FAMILY WELFARE be pleased to state:

(a) whether number of deaths due to brain stroke is continuously increasing in various rural areas of the country, if so, the details thereof;

(b) whether the Government is contemplating to take any concrete and effective step to control this;

(c) if so, the details thereof and the time by which it is likely to be done; and

(d) if not, the reasons therefor?

(a) to (d): According to ICMR report entitled “India: Health of the Nation’s States”, published in 2017, stroke is the 4th most common cause of death in India with death rate 53/100,000 population.
The Government is implementing National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases and Stroke (NPCDCS) for interventions up to District level under the National Health Mission. Focus of NPCDCS is on strengthening infrastructure, human resource development, health promotion, early diagnosis, management and referral. Population based screening for common NCD, including diabetes and hypertension, which are main risk factors for stroke, has been rolled out in more than 215 Districts. Screening for common NCDs is also an integral part of service delivery under Ayushman Bharat-Health & Wellness Centres. Separately, Operational Guidelines on Prevention and Management of Stroke was also released in August, 2019.
