(a) the details of the activities and achievements made in the field of Anthropology and Ethnology during the last three years in the county;

(b) the details of expenditure incurred thereon for the said period;

(c) the details of research work done during the last three years and the expenditure incurred for the same; and

(d) the details of future plans of the Government in these fields?

ANNEXURE REFERRED IN PART (a) OF LOK SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. 3642 FOR 21.12.2015 REGARDING ACHIEVEMENT MADE IN ANTHROPOLOGY AND ETHNOLOGY

Activities and Achievement for 2012-13


• In the year 2012-2013, the Anthropological Survey of India (AnSI) launched a new National project “Bio-cultural Diversity, Environment and Sustainable Development”. The other projects that are being undertaken include Induction of DNA Technology. Under this project research teams have initiated fieldwork in different parts of the Country.

• To assist the Andaman & Nicobar Administration in reviewing the policy on the Ang (Jarawa) of Andaman, 2004, a pilot study and second phase of fieldwork on the project has been undertaken by AnSI.

• AnSI initiated to study all the fourteen Biosphere Reserves in India, to understand biological and cultural diversity.

• A programme was undertaken by the AnSI with regard to study the Particularly Vulnerable Tribal groups (PVTGs).

• Under the Community Genetics Extension programme, ''Awareness Cum Thalassaemia Screening Camps’ were organized by AnSI for the detection of ß-Thalassaemia.

• Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya (IGRMS) is one of the finest anthropological museum in the World and dedicated to depict the integrated story of mankind in time and space by an interdisciplinary approach. IGRMS included traditional house of Dogra Community of Jammu, Youth dormitory of Juang community of Odisha, Granary from Uttarakhand in its open-air exhibitions.

• IGRMS organized several exhibitions, workshops, programmes on the performing Art presentations in different parts of the country. It has published 5 books during the year.


Activities and Achievement for 2013-14

• During 2013-14, AnSI took up major projects like DNA Polymorphism of the Contemporary Indian Populations, Physical Growth & Development of Children, DNA Banking, Man & Environment, Social Impact Assessment (SIA) and the merged Community Genetics and Health & Bio-cultural Adaptation including the “Bio-cultural Diversity.

• Under the DNA Polymorphism of the Contemporary Indian Populations, massive sequencing work of Y SNPs for 70 tribal populations has been completed and mt. DNA analysis has been taken up in the DNA laboratories by AnSI.



• A series of Health awareness and screening camps were held by AnSI in different tribal areas of the country aimed at creating an awareness of health disorders and in particular genetic anomalies.

• AnSI organized a gallery/exhibition in the State Museum at Ujjayanta Palace, Agartala which was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Vice President Shri M. Hamid Ansari.

• IGRMS added traditional house of Limbu community of Sikkim and exhibits of Lost Wax process from Odisha and Van Devir Than from West Bengal etc. to its open air exhibition.

• IGRMS also organized temporary and travelling exhibition like Island Cultures of India, Prayas-exhibition on museums effort for accessibility. It also organized education programmes, artist workshops, Museum popular lectures etc.


Activities and Achievement for 2014-15

• Under the New Plan Scheme the research project, “Bio-Cultural Diversity, Environment & Sustainable Development”, was undertaken by different Regional/Sub Regional Centres of the AnSI in different parts of the Country,

• Fieldwork for the Regional Project “An Ethnographic Study of Shompen” to Great Nicobar Island has also been undertaken by AnSI.

• Under the Plan Project Bio-cultural Adaptation: Community Genetics & Health:, AnSI organized health Awareness Camp by AnSI.

• Under the Plan project “Physical Growth and Development of Children in North East India: A Public Health Issue”, fieldwork was undertaken.

• 2414 ethnographic objects from various folk and tribal communities had been collected for museums reserve collection by the IGRMS.

• IGRMS organized periodical and traveling exhibitions, artist workshops on Miniature Painting, Floor and wall painting, seminars on Anthropological Researches in India, Indian Anthropological Congress-2015, Museum Popular Lectures. It has also published 4 books.

ANNEXURE REFERRED IN PART (d) OF LOK SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. 3642 FOR 21.12.2015 REGARDING ACHIEVEMENT MADE IN ANTHROPOLOGY AND ETHNOLOGY

The details of future plans of the Anthropological Survey of India

1. Study of Bio-cultural Diversity, Environment and Sustainable Development, DNA Polymorphism of the Contemporary Indian Populations for establishing lineages between the communities, Man and Environment (Biosphere Reserves) and Community Genetics and Health for Thalassaemia, Sickle Cell Anemia and Life Style diseases.
2. To establish Anthropological Survey of India as a nodal agency for anthropological research in the country.
3. Study of contemporary issues like tribal migrants, study of minorities like Parsis, Jews, study of small populations, migration from villages, tribes in transition, ethnicity in urban population, border areas with cross-border connections, climate change and its impact on people.
4. Networking with concerned ministries and departments like ICMR, Biotechnology of CSIR, Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Ministry of Home, Ministry of External Affairs, NITI Ayog, Ministry of AYUSH, Health, Social Welfare etc., in order to evolve common strategy for need based anthropological research in the country.
5. Modernization and expansion of anthropological museums in the country.
6. Strengthening outreach activities and popularizing research findings through publications, seminars, workshops, awareness programmes, social media and website and Networking with Universities and other Research Institutes in the country to expand anthropological education and research.
7. Strengthen International School of Anthropology and organise long and short term courses for professionals, planners, administrators, students and research scholars.
The details of future plans of the Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya (IGRMS)

1. Open air exhibitions: Addition of four new house type exhibits from North-East States, Himalayan region and South India.
2. Development of New galleries in Indoor Museum building: Two new galleries on Music Tradition of India and North-Eastern Cultures will be added.
3. Research on Oral Tradition, Vernacular Architecture, Cane and Bamboo tradition in North-Eastern India, Weekly market in tribal and rural areas, Heritage cities/villages, ICH of North East, Rock Art in India and on Sacred Textile will be initiated.
4. Outreach Programmes will be strengthened by organising innovative programmes and activities.
5. Collaborative programmes with Universities, Colleges, Schools, IITs, IIMs will be organised to explore ways to build awareness about new museum movement and how it can promote and present cultural diversity of India and also project shared history of humankind.
