(a) to (c) Preservation of quality of both surface water
and ground water has been given a high priority in the National
Water Policy â2002, the revised National Water Policy as
approved in the 5th meeting of the National Water Resources
Council held on 1.4.2002. This Policy envisages regular
monitoring of the water quality, improvement of water quality
wherever called for, treatment of effluents to acceptable
levels before discharging them into natural streams,
maintaining minimum flows in perennial rivers and adoption of
the principle of âpolluter paysâ in order to preserve the
quality of water. No quantifying assessment of water likely to
be preserved has been made.
