(a) whether the Government are contemplating to launch an immunisation programme to eradicate Hepatitis-B disease;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) if not, the reasons therefor;

(d) the number of patients suffering from Hepatitis-B in the country as on November 30, 2002, State-wise; and

(e) the details of assistance proposed to be provided by the Government to the States in order to eradicate the said disease?

STATEMENT REFERRED TO IN REPLY TO LOK SABHA STARRED QUESTION NO. 231 FOR 4.12.2002


The Government of India has launched a pilot project for introduction of Hepatitis B vaccination in the Universal Immunization Programme. Since this is a pilot activity, the programme will initially be limited to slums of 15 metropolitan cities during 2002-03 (phase I) and 32 districts in 2003-04 (phase II). The names of the cities and districts are indicated in Annexure-I. The expansion of the programme to additional areas of the country will be considered subsequently. Vaccine and AD syringes are being provided to the States in kind. Training has been imparted to health care personnel of the concerned States as Master Trainers who would further train other functionaries of the States with the financial and technical assistance provided by the Government of India.


As regard patients suffering from Hepatitis B in the country, as per the Indian Council of Medical Research, the entire country is rated to come under the intermediate zone of Hepatitis B virus prevalence ranging between 2-7 per cent. The number of reported cases and deaths during 1999, 2000 and 2001 State-wise for viral Hepatitis, which includes Hepatitis A, B and C, are indicated in Annexure II. No such information is available separately for Hepatitis B cases and deaths.
