Question : GIGANTIC PROJECT FOR ROADS .



(a) whether the Government have prepared a gigantic project to connect all the corners of the country with roads;

(b) if so, the total estimated length of roads required to be constructed under this project;

(c) the number of four or more lane roads by the end of March, 2000;

(d) whether any time limit has been stipulated for constructing the remaining four lane roads; and

(e) if so, the details thereof?

STATEMENT REFERRED TO IN PART (a) TO (e) IN REPLY TO LOK SABHA STARRED QUESTION NO.5 FOR ANSWER ON 20.11.2000 BY SHRI ZORA SINGH MANN AND SHRI RAMACHANDER BAINDA REGARDING GIGANTIC PROJECT FOR ROADS.

(a) & (b) National Highways Development Project (NHDP) connecting four metropolitan cities and North-South and East-West Corridors involves upgradation of the National Highways to four/six lane standard. Details are as under:


(i) Golden Quadrilateral (GQ) component connecting : 5,952 Km. Delhi, Calcutta, Chennai and Mumbai.

(ii) North-South (NS) corridor connecting Kashmir : 7,300 Km with Kanyakumari including Salem-Cochin Spur and East-West (EW) corridor connecting Silchar with Porbandar Total : 13,252 Km
(c) 1016 Km

(d) & (e) GQ is targeted for completion by end 2003 and NS & EW Corridors by 2007.
