Question : Conservation of Lakes

(a) the steps taken by the Government to conserve and prevent water pollution of natural lakes of Rajasthan including Udaipur;
(b) the funds allocated by the Government to various States and districts for conserving lakes along with the funds utilized so far by the State Governments;
(c) whether the Union Government has received any proposal from the State Government of Rajasthan to check the pollution in various lakes of Udaipur; and
(d) if so, the details thereof and the action taken by the Government thereon?

(a) to (d) Ministry is implementing the Centrally Sponsored Scheme of National Plan for Conservation of Aquatic Eco-systems for conservation and management of wetlands in the countryon cost sharing basis between the Central Government and respective State Governments/Union Territories (UTs). The scheme aims at holistic conservation and restoration of wetlands including lakes for achieving the desired water quality enhancement, besides improvement in biodiversity and ecosystem through an integrated and multidisciplinary approach and a common regulatory framework.

Different activities under the scheme include pollution abatement through interception, diversion and treatment of wastewater, shoreline protection, lake front development, in-situ cleaning, storm water management, bioremediation, catchment area treatment, lake beautification, survey & demarcation, bio-fencing, fisheries development, weed control, biodiversity conservation, education and awareness creation, community participation, etc.

Under the scheme,the Ministry has sanctioned 155 projects for conservation of wetlandsand an amount of Rs.1009.44 crores has been released to the State Governments/UTs since 1987-88 which includes the Pichhola lake system and Fatehsagar lake in Udaipur.
