Question : CORDLESS TELEPHONY



(a) whether there is any proposal to allot 20 MHz of spectrum for cordless telephone system within a small area;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether there is any objection from Defence Ministry for the same;

(d) if so, the details thereof and the reasons therefor; and

(e) the reaction of the Government thereon?

(a) & (b) The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has recommended, inter-alia, that 1880-1900 MHz band should be delicensed for low power operations of Cordless Telecommunications System (CTS) for private and indoor use (not for commercial use).

(c) & (d) Defence Ministry have raised their concerns indicating, among others, the importance of this band for their operational requirements, possible interference to their networks, etc.

(e) The issue related to delicensing of 1880-1900 MHz band for low power operations of CTS is under consideration of the Government.
