Question : NEET

Will the Minister of HEALTH AND FAMILY WELFARE be pleased to state:

(a) whether the Government proposes to conduct a single Entrance Test as National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for admission in Government/self financed/private medical colleges across the country, if so, the details thereof;

(b) whether the Government has received requests from various State Governments including Tamil Nadu to exempt students from appearing in NEET for UG/P G medical admissions and
if so, the reaction of the Government thereto;

(c) whether the Government has carried out any study and collected data on the performance of rural students in medical education and the effect of NEET like exams on their career prospects in medical field, if so, the details and findings thereof;

(d) whether a number of States including Andhra Pradesh have requested for reduction of cut-off marks of NEET for UG/PG medical education, if so, the details thereof and the reaction of the Government thereon; and

(e) the details of students appeared/ passed and got admission through NEET during 2015-16 and the number of students likely to appeared in 2017, State/ UT-wise?

ANSWER

(a): Section 10D of Indian Medical Council Act, 1956 prescribes conducting of a uniform entrance examination namely National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) to all medical educational institutions at undergraduate and post-graduate level.

(b): The Central Government has received request from State Government of Puducherry and Tamil Nadu to exempt students from appearing in NEET for UG/PG medical admissions. However, the provisions of the IMC Act for conducting NEET apply across the country without any exemption.



(c): No such study has been taken place.

(d): Yes. The request has been received from the State Governments of Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra for reducing of cut-off marks of NEET PG and the same are under consideration.

(e): As informed by National Board of Examinations, the number of candidates appeared and qualified in NEET –PG-2017 held in December, 2016 are 1,16,388 and 64,139 respectively. Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) informed that 7,31,223 candidates appeared in NEET-UG-2016 and 4,09,477 qualified the exam. The State wise list is enclosed at Annexure-I. It is also informed that 11,35,104 candidates registered for NEET-UG-2017. State wise list is enclosed at Annexure-II.
