Question : Smart Schools

(a) whether the Government proposes to set up smart schools across the country;
(b) if so, the details thereof including the number of schools selected for the purpose along with the present status of the proposal, State/UT-wise;
(c) the expenditure incurred/likely to be incurred thereon including the share of the States therein; and
(d) the time by when these smart schools are likely to be established?

(a) and (b) The “Information Communication Technology in School” component of RMSA Scheme provides for setting up of 150 smart schools across the country to act as “Technology Demonstrators” and to propagate ICT skills among students of neighbourhood schools. 54 Government Senior and Higher Secondary schools have been approved to be set up as Smart Schools across the country under the Scheme. The State-wise list of these 54 schools approved is annexed.

(c) and (d) Under RMSA, an amount of Rs. 25 lakh per school is provided for setting up a smart school. Further, an amount of Rs. 2.5 lakh per smart school is provided as recurring grant for meeting various expenditures including maintenance, consumables, internet usage and monitoring cost. The sharing pattern between the Centre and States is 75:25 except North-Eastern State, including Sikkim where the sharing pattern is 90:10. The converged RMSA Scheme including “ICT in Schools” component is sanctioned for 12th Five Year Plan.
