Question : FUNDS FOR DEVELOPMENT OF NATIONAL ZOOLOGICAL PARKS



(a) the names of recognised and non-recognised National Zoological Parks (NZPs)/Sanctuaries/Forest Reserves at present in the country including Delhi, State-wise;

(b) the annual expenditure being incurred by the Government for their upkeep;

(c) whether the Union Government has received any proposals from certain States regarding allocation of funds for various schemes like development of National Zoological Parks, prevention of forest fires, security and forest development etc. during the last three years and current year;

(d) if so, the details thereof indicating the funds provided and utilized during the said period, scheme-wise and State-wise;

(e) whether any study has been undertaken on the untimely death of certain animals in various zoos;

(f) if so, the details thereof; and

(g) the guidelines issued by Central Zoo Authority vis-à-vis action taken by the Government for protecting wild animals in these areas?

(a) The details of National Parks / Sanctuaries / Tiger Reserves / Elephant Reserves / National Zoological Parks / Recognized Zoos / Non Recognized Zoos are at Annexure – I. The state-wise details of National Parks and Sanctuaries are at Annexure – II.

(b) The details regarding annual release of funds under various Centrally Sponsored Schemes for 2004-2005 are at Annexure – III.

(c) & (d) Under the Centrally Sponsored Schemes consolidated proposals are received annually from the States that include components on prevention of forest fires, security and forest development, etc. Funds released / utilized under various Schemes during last three years are at Annexure – IV, V & VI. No money has been released so far during the current year i.e. 2005-06.

(e) No such study has been undertaken by Government of India. However, post mortem is conducted in each case of death of animals in the zoos.

(f) Does not arise.

(g) The Central Zoo Authority from time to time issues guidelines with respect to proper upkeep and health care of wild animals in zoos which are being complied by all the States.
