Question : Sedition Cases

(a) whether it is a fact that the sedition case lodged against 49 eminent citizens in the country for writing a letter to the Prime Minister expressing their concern about the mob lynching was closed by the Muzaffarpur police;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether the police or the magistrate was at fault for registering an FIR in this case;

(d) whether it is a fact that this infamous sedition law has been misused by Governments in power against the critiques of the Government; and

(e) if so, whether the Government would consider a proposal for repealing the sedition provision in the Indian Penal Code?

(a) to (c): A case was registered u/s 124A and others provisions of IPC in Sadar Police Station, Muzaffarpur on 2/10/2019 against persons, mostly belonging to the film industry, for allegedly trying to discredit the country. After due investigation, the Police has filed a closure report in the case.

(d): No such instance has come to notice.

(e): In view of (d) above, the question does not arise.
