Question : REPORT ON SUICIDE CASES



(a) whether the Government is aware about the recent report released by the World Health Organisation in Geneva that India has recorded the highest number of suicides in South East Asia in 2012;

(b) if so, the details thereof, and the reasons for the high rate of suicides in the country;

(c) the percentage of suicides reported in different age groups in the country; and

(d) the corrective steps being taken by the Government in this regard?

(a) to (b): Yes Madam. As per data maintained by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) a total of 1,35,445 suicides were committed in India in 2012 among all the age groups in the country.

(c): The details of age-group wise suicides committed during 2012 is as given below:-

(d): The Government has approved implementation of the District Mental Health Programme in some of the districts of the country with added components of suicide prevention services, work place stress management, life skills training and counseling in schools and colleges.
