Question : Medical Education

Will the Minister of HEALTH AND FAMILY WELFARE be pleased to state:

(a) whether the Government proposes to regulate standard of medical education in the country, if so, the details thereof;

(b) whether views of the State Governments and other stakeholders have been ascertained in this regard, if so, the details thereof and if not the reasons therefor;

(c) whether medical education being imparted in the country is not proving to be worthwhile in terms of quality;

(d) if so, whether the Government proposes to take some concrete steps and proposed to set up National Medical Commission to improve the quality of medical education; and

(e) if so, the details thereof and the time by which the changes in the prevailing system are likely to be implemented?

(a) to (c) As per the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956, the Medical Council of India (MCI) is the statutory body responsible for establishing and maintaining standards in medical education in the country.
(d) & (e) Based on the report of Group of Expert Committee chaired by Late Dr. Ranjit Roy Choudhary and recommendations of the 92nd Report of the Parliamentary Standing Committee, a draft National Medical Commission Bill has been framed.
