MINISTER OF STATE (INDEPENDENT CHARGE) FOR ENVIRONMENT, FORESTS AND CLIMATE CHANGE (SHRI PRAKASH JAVADEKAR)

(a)&(b) Reports of killing of peacocks in the country have been occasionally received in the Ministry. The management and protection of wildlife like birds and animals is the responsibility of the concerned State/ Union Territory Governments. Information on wildlife offences in the States/Union Territories is not collated in the Ministry.

Population estimation with respect of certain flagship species like tiger and elephants is carried out by the State Governments at periodic intervals. No such survey has been carried out for peacocks.

(c) &(d) Presently the Ministry has no specific scheme/ proposal aimed at protection of peacocks. However, the Ministry provides financial assistance to State/Union Territory Governments for protection of wildlife and its habitats including peacocks under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme of ‘Integrated Development of Wildlife Habitats’ and ‘Project Tiger’. Details of funds released to State/Union Territory Governments under this Scheme during last three years is given in the Annexure.
