Question : FOREIGN INSTITUTIONS IN RETAIL



(a) whether it is a fact that various foreign institutions are functioning in the retail market of the country since the last few years;

(b) if so, the names of such foreign institutions functioning since January, 2012;

(c) the number of retail outlets set up by each of these institutions in the country; and

(d) the total annual turnover of these institutions at present in the country?

(a) & (b): As per extant policy, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) is not permitted in retail trade except in single Brand product retailing where Foreign Investment upto 100% is permitted with prior Government approval and subject to specified conditions. As such under the policy various foreign institutions are functioning in the retail market since last few years. A list of approved proposals under Single Brand Retail Trade is annexed.

(c) & (d): Retail being a state subject, no data regarding setting up of outlets, turnover etc. is maintained centrally.
