Question : IISER

(a) the details of number of Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER) functioning in the country, State and location-wise;
(b) the norms followed by the Government in establishing IISER in various parts of the country;
(c) whether the Government has received any request from the State Government of Telangana for establishing IISER in Hyderabad, if so, the details thereof including the steps taken for establishing IISER in Hyderabad; and
(d) if not, the reasons for not accepting the request of setting IISER in Hyderabad?

(a) : There are seven IISERs functioning in our country(India). The details are as under:

(b) : The norms generally considered by this Ministry in establishing IISERs in various parts of the country are- availability of adequate financial and sustained resources with Government of India, geographical locations that are unserved by quality science education, large unserved states with potential science students demand, availability of location/land close to National Laboratories for synergy and not more than 30 km from airports and adequate area of land made available by States for setting up of an IISER.




(c) and (d): Yes, This Ministry had received a letter from Shri K. Chandrasekhar Rao, Chief Minister of Telangana, addressed to the Hon’ble Prime Minister for sanctioning an Indian Institute of Science Education & Research (IISER) in Hyderabad, State of Telangana. Consideration of setting up new IISERs in the country is a continuous process in the Ministry.
