Question : Dwelling Units for EWS

Will the Minister of HOUSING AND URBAN POVERTY ALLEVIATION be pleased to state:


(a) the details of the dwelling units constructed for Economically Weaker Section (EWS) in the country during each of the last three years and the current year, State-wise/UT-wise including West Bengal;

(b) whether financial assistance has been sought by various States including West Bengal from Housing and Urban Development Corporation during the above said period for housing of EWS; and

(c) if so, the details thereof and the time by which the pending proposals, if any, are likely to be completed?

(a): “Land” and“Colonization” are State subjects and therefore, it is the primary responsibility of the State Governments to construct houses for Economically Weaker Section (EWS). However, under schemes like Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission


(JnNURM) and Rajiv AwasYojana(RAY), the central Government provided assistance to State Governments for construction of houses for EWS. State/UT-wise details of dwelling units constructed for EWS during the last three years under JnNURM& RAY are at Annexure-I.

(b)&(c): Yes Madam. Details of financial assistance provided by Housing & Urban Development Corporation (HUDCO) to various State Government for construction of houses for EWS, are at Annexure-II. As the houses are being constructed by State Governments, it is upto them to expedite the construction of remaining units. However, HUDCO has not received any proposal for financial assistance, from the State of West Bengal during the last three years. As on date, three proposals received from State Governments for construction of houses for EWS, are under process in HUDCO,details of which are at Annexure-III.
