Question : NEW SCHEMES FOR DRINKING WATER IN RURAL AREAS



(a) whether the Government have approved three schemes for improving drinking water facilities in the rural areas;

(b) if so, the number of handpumps likely to be installed, the number of schools likely to be covered and the number of traditional sources of water to be covered under these schemes District-wise and

(c) the time by which these schemes are likely to be implemented?

(a) Yes, sir.

(b) & (c) It is proposed to install 1 lakh handpumps, revive 1-lakh traditional sources of water and to cover 1-lakh primary schools with drinking water facilities during 2003-04 and 2004-05. Funds are allocated to the States and district-wise distribution of the schemes is finalised by the State Governments as per requirements of the rural areas.
