(a) & (b): The exact number of young heart patients in the country is not known as the data on the subject
is not maintained centrally. The published studies indicate that South Asians including Indians have Ischaemic
Heart Disease at an earlier age than people in developed countries due to high prevalence of risk factors e.g.
sedentary lifestyle, tobacco use, increased consumption of food high in fats and salt etc.

(e) The Government of India has initiated a National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes,
Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke (NPCDCS) at an estimated outlay of Rs.1230.90 crore for the 11th Five Year Plan.
The programme focuses on health promotion, capacity building including human resource development, early diagnosis
and management of these diseases and integration with the primary health care system. The programme is being
implemented in 100 selected Districts of 21 States during the years 2010-12.
