(a): As per the Information available with ICMR, an estimated number of 120-150 thousand patients with sickle cell disease are present in India.
(b): Such data is not maintained at central level.
(c) & (d): A proposal under NHM was received from State of Odisha. However, this was not approved being outside the mandate of NHM.
(e): Public Health and Hospitals is a State subject. Under the National Health Mission, support is being provided to States for Prevention and Management of Hemoglobinopathies including Thalassemia and Sickle Cell disease based on proposals submitted by States/UTs in their Programme Implementation Plans. Comprehensive Guidelines for Prevention and Management of Hemoglobinopathies including Thalassemia and Sickle Cell disease have been developed by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and shared with States/UTs. The Guidelines provide for, screening of every pregnant woman during Ante Natal Checks, pre-marital Counselling at the college level and onetime screening for variant anaemia for all children in class VIII, new born screening, prenatal diagnosis, awareness generation etc.
