Question : Facial Biometric Identification for Air Travel

(a) whether Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) has recently launched Face Check-in termed as ''Biometric Enabled Seamless Travel Experience'' (BEST) in Terminal 3 on three month trial basis;

(b) if so, the details thereof including the response received from the passengers on BEST; and

(c) whether such facility will be launched in all other terminals and airports across the country, if so, the details thereof and if not, the reasons therefor?

(a) & (b): Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) has recently launched a pilot project on Biometric Enabled Seamless Travel (BEST) under the DigiYatra scheme at Terminal-III of Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, New Delhi. At present the pilot project & trials have been initiated on a limited number of flights. So far, 2605 passengers have registered. DigiYatra, an initiative of the Ministry of Civil Aviation is a facial recognition enabled e-boarding system for passengers at Indian airports and provides a seamless travel experience and reduces queue waiting time.

(c): The airports at Kolkata, Pune, Vijayawada, Varanasi, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Cochin, Mumbai and Delhi are covered in first phase.
