Question : CONSUMPTION OF PETROL AND DIESEL



(a) the annual consumption of petrol and diesel in the country during 2009-10;

(b) whether the available quantity of petrol and diesel from indigenous sources is insufficient to meet the demand;

(c) if so, the reasons therefor?

(d) the quantum of petrol and diesel imported during 2009-10, country-wise;

(e) the steps being taken by the Government to increase the production of the said products during the current financial year:

(f) whether any foreign assistance is also being received to increase oil production; and

(g) if so, the details thereof?

(a): The consumption of Petrol and Diesel in the country during 2009-10 is as under:-

(b) to (d): The country is self-sufficient in meeting the demand of petroleum products. Any shortfall in availability of specific petroleum products is met through imports. Country-wise details of quantity of Petrol and Diesel imported during April 2009 – February 2010 by the Public Sector Oil Marketing Companies are as under: -

(e): The refining capacity of public sector and private sector refineries is estimated to reach 195.319 Million Metric Tonnes Per Annum (MMTPA) at the end current financial year i.e. 2010-11 from existing capacity of 182.086 MMTPA with capacity expansion of 13.233 MMTPA during the year. At the end of the XIth five year plan, the country’s refining capacity is projected to be 255.8 MMTPA. As a result of impressive increase in the country’s refining capacity, India exported 39 MMT of refined petroleum products during 2008-09 valued at $ 26.4 billion. India is poised to emerge as a regional refining and exporting hub.

(f) & (g): No financial assistance from any foreign sources is being received by National Oil companies i.e. Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) and Oil India Limited (OIL) to increase crude oil production in the country.
