STATEMENT REFERRED TO IN REPLY TO PART (a) TO (c) OF LOK SABHA STARRED QUESTION NO. 411 FOR ANSWER ON 18TH DECEMBER, 2002, ASKED BY DR. RAMESH CHAND TOMAR REGARDING ADDITIONAL CESS ON PETROL/DIESEL.
(a) Yes, Sir. The Ministry has proposed to levy an additional cess of 30 paise per litre on petrol and diesel for funding of second phase of the National Highways Development Project (NHDP).
(b) There has not been any shortfall in the funding for implementation of NHDP Phase-I during the last three years.
(c) As per information received from Ministry of Finance a total amount of Rs. 13,789.8 crores was collected as cess during the last three years upto November, 2001. The investments made from cess, during the same period for development of National Highways and State roads (other than rural roads) are as below:-
